MGMT co-founders Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser recorded the album at Tarbox Road Studios, where they worked with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann, who had a hand in the band's first two albums (2008's Oracular Spectacular and 2010's Congratulations). MGMT includes nine originals and a cover of "Introspection" by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade.
The first video expected to be released will be "Your Life Is A Lie," with videos also in the works for MGMT tracks "Alien Days" and "Cool Song No. 2." Furthermore, MGMT is assembling a variety of visual elements for MGMT listeners dubbed "The Optimizer" which is described in a press release as a method which "provides listeners of the album with a simultaneously aural & optical listening experience featuring video & CGI work by Andrew Benson, Emilio Gomariz, Geoffrey Lillemon, and Chris Timms."
